In 1946 I was a photographer on the escort aircraft carrier the USS Cape Gloucester, CVE 109. Captain Sherman Burroughs, for whom the high school at China Lake was named, was the ship's captain prior to my coming aboard. Among the ships photographic files was one of Captain Burroughs inspecting the crew. I scanned the picture and it is now on a web site of the carrier along with three pictures of the ship. I will be happy to forward any you might want. In the spring of 1951 I came to China Lake and worked as as facilities scheduler in the Lab. I left in the fall of 1952 to begin a teaching career in Redding, California and retired ten years ago after a 42 year career in education, the last 35 of which were at California State University, Chico. While at China Lake I served as a substitute teacher at Burroughs High School when credentialed subs were very hard to find on the base. Visiting your web site brought back good memories. Best--Jim Gregg

I moved to Trona in 1979. I did not like it at first but I soon realized it was a great place to raise my kids. In those days there was lots to do alot of very nice people and most became good friends of mine. I now live in Ridgecrest and love it. My kids even moved back here, a little laid back for them tho..

Hey everyone, I graduated in 1980 and moved up to San Jose,Ca the day after we got back from Disneyland. Where Patty Bossert and I took Mushrooms! What a BLAST that night was! I stayed in San Jose area and ended up working @ UPS for 12 years. I had a condo, fast car and a career, until I looked up an old friend. We became very friendly and I quit my job, sold my condo and drove my Miata to Georgia; not a fun thing to do, Miata's aren't made to drive all day. Now I am married to Billy Thornton we have a four year old son and I am proud to say I am a stay at home mom! Our son will be going to pre-K on Aug. 3rd and I am looking forward to some time off. Now for a Ridgecrest story, One night I was cruising around town in my parents land cruiser and happened to see Bill so we picked him up and didn't take him home until the next morning! My friend was visting from San Jose and Janet Nixon was with us. We stopped and got some oil cans (Froster) and found a place in the dessert to party. We sat on the hood of the landcruiser, watched the stars, talked, partied, laughed, and then watched the sunrise.

Comments: Hi Pat, was just looking through boxes of old pics from my mother and father and found a print of fish rock before it was painted. Looks like it's the same one on your site. I'm not sure if my grandfather or father took it but I'm sure we have the negative somewhere. Some of the other pics of the valley are just incredible. Back when there were only a few buildings in the valley. I'm going to start working my way through them. Also, in June we gave the historical society the bound copies of the Ridgecrest newspaper with my grandfathers' column. They are going to try to preserve them. They were published in the fifties.
