We moved here in December, 1966. I started travelling in January 1967, and was on the road ever since. Although I wasn't around very much, I loved the desert. We moved into Wherry Housing, on Segundo street. We were only there about six months because we bought a home in town in July of '67. The reason we moved up here, was the horrible smog in the San Gabrial Valley, where we lived after I got out of the Air Forfce. I worked at the Jet Propulsion Lab before coming up here, but I really wanted the clean air and the hot weather. No regrets, even after being on the City Council and Mayor in 1980~1984. I am now retired, and loving it more an more every day.

WOW!! What a fantastic site - so many memories! We arrived in Ridgecrest in August of 1965, after a grueling drive across country. I was 3, so I don't remember much. However, family lore tells me that when first driving into town on that hot (of course!) August day, squeezed into a 1960 Chevy Biscayne with Dad and 4 children under the age of 6, my mother burst into tears upon seeing a sign on Inyokern Rd. that proclaimed "Slippery when wet or icy" My mother, a proper, Irish Catholic former nun, reportedly sobbed "This road has never been wet and it sure as HELL has never been icy!!"

In typical Ridgecrest fashion, however, the town and it's people drew us in and it became, truly our "home."

Comments:
Once you live at 5800' in the Rockies or anywhere else green, Ridgecrest can be quite boring to visit. Luckily for residents it's in the middle of everything one could want to do.

We moved to China Lake in 1950, and my first friend was Bob Short who befriended me as "the new kid on the block"! Great guy, whose passing tore me up. Grew up playing sports and having fun with Roger and Bob Short, Dee Davis, Larry Jeffris, Don Zarzana, Donnie Cobb, Gary Osborne, Bill Bacon, Gene Vejtasa, John Oney, Billy Wilde, Jimmy Powers, Tom Siopes, Gary "Chino" Jacobs, Johnny Orozco and many, many others. Loved the years I spent at China Lake, and all the neat kids I went to school with as well. We had it pretty good, good economy, low inflation, no war, and the country as a whole had some good ethical values!! Today, well I think the good old US of A is fast going down hill! But in our days at China Lake, all was good! Look forward to hearing from others via email. Best to all. Gary Koehler
