I was TDY to NOTS a couple of time in the mid 60's, I was stationed at George AFB (about a hundred miles south of China Lake), and a weapon specialist (AFSC 46250). We accompanied our Lockheed F-104Cs up to NOTS to assist the Lockheed factory reps in loading some Navy weapons on our birds. The LSC guys were NOT allowed to hang any live or dummy weapons on the Starfighters. We would set down with them and figure our how to hang or load something. They would try to rig up a way to activate it and get a relaease or drop. Our pilots would fly out to Cuddeback Dry Lake (our bombing range east of Johannesburg), and see if the 'whatever' would fire or release as designed. We also went up to NOTS once and recovered one of our F-104s that diverted to NOTS. Sorry, I don;t have much more to relate, our TDYs were usually for just a day, but we spent an overnighter once.
