Growing up at China Lake was wonderful.  Starting in the third grade(1947) at the Byrnes Street School, fifth and sixth grade at Rowe Street School, then Burroughs Junior High and Burroughs High School(class of 1958) were some of the best years of my life.  I especially enjoyed the access to the Sierras and the many desert mountains in the vicinity.  The people I met through school, scouts and other activities were wonderful.  Times change and people do too.  Living in the Salt Lake City area for the past thiry-five years has been an extention of the life I experienced at China Lake.  This is a community built in the high desert of Utah that has easy access to the Rocky Mountains, world class skiing and all of the out door activities you can imagine.  I consider myself a desert rat.  I enjoy deserts where ever I find them.  I'm facinated by sand dunes.  The deserts of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico are favorites of mine.  My father, Norman E. Young was a teacher at Burroughs(1947-1960).  My mother, Helen R. Young, was a mathematician at Michelson Laboratory and retired(1970).  My sister, Monica Nuffer(Burroughs class of 1955) retired at China Lake as a Supply Supervisor and lives with her husband Harold Nuffer, retired mechanical engineer at China Lake.  They operate a winery at Plymouth California by the name of TKC.

I really enjoyed this website; it brings back alot of fond memories of Ridgecrest.  We had such a tight high school class, and everyone knew everyone.  It was a great growing up experience. My mom and step dad are still here, and still love it!

I was raised in So Cal and dad decided to move here to work for a friend who was the pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.  Pastor Bob Hoffman (RIP) asked my dad, Lorin Smith (RIP), to be the principal of Ridgecrest Christian School in 1981.  We lived in a mobile home about a half mile on the other side of the overpass on Brown Rd.
Summers were hot, but adventurous as I played in the big pit that they got the dirt from to make the overpass.  How I never got bit as I hunted for scorpions and snakes I'll never know.  Dug many forts in the desert underneath the spreading, but thin branches of the largest creasote bushes I could find.
We moved in town soon after the flood; on the corner of Mahan and Iowa Street on the north end of R/c heights (Rocket town).  I lived there when the big snow hit us.  My brother and I still went to Murray as my parents hadn't yet changed us to Munroe.  School closed and since my dad then worked at the White House (Admin. building on base) we decided to walk to his work.  He had already left work so my brother and I walked all the way home in snow that came almost up to our knees.
I still live in R/c and couldn't imagine raising my 4 children anywhere else.  The heart of this town is the people.  I have travelled many places and our hospitality and friendliness would rival any other towns.  I love you Ridgecrest!
