As i check your'e site from time to time i see a few names here and there that i remember, yes i have memories of the desert because i was raised there. But as i grow older the memories are starting to fade away as time itself is,there will never be enough time to tell you all i can remember about the desert,I was raised in Randsburg went to school in Johanesburg then Ridgecrest o how i hated that bus ride !!!! It seems that the memories of the friends i had there are like dust blowing in the desert winds.I was back to the desert about a year ago and i found not much has changed  in the Randsburg area ,Ridgecrest has been making head way and still growing.I wish i could turn back the hands of time and change a few things from those early seventys. o well it matter no more because im like the the desert winds still drifting. i wish things could of been different.as some people will know what im talking about but to most it's just talk.time is running out and the winds keep blowing.to all those that remember i wish you well and i hope your'e life has been filled with happyness.enough said for now,for the people that remember me they know how to get ahold of me, for now i think i will take a ride and chase that desert wind.-----------Ralph

Comments:
Last spring my wife and daughter and I visited my grandparents' grave in Joburg... My Uncle Merle Wisely is buried in the same plot--he was a Clark Gable look-alike who tended bar at various spots in the desert, including the Oasis in Trona.  He and his most recent "wife," Ruth, lived in Red Mountain.  Ruth was a beautician.  Both of them were true desert characters--Merle with his deep tan, serving me Roy Rogers or Shirley Temple drinks at the bar, and at that time no one gave a tinker's damn that I was a kid not just IN the bar, but AT the bar....Ruth had her hair dyed red-red-red, and had a booming smokers' laugh.

I remember that once or twice during the summer, as a special treat, we'd drive from Inyokern into Ridgecrest and buy whole BBQ'd chickens at a grocery store.  They'd pack it in a foil bag and we'd head back to Inyokern.

We'll be back in a couple months--this time I'll be going in search of the "Blackjack River" on top of Rabbit Hill.  Grandpa climbed the hill every morning after he moved off the base; Grandma gave him table scraps and he would give them to the animals that would be gathered in anticipation.  Cottontails, jacks, a kangaroo rat--I even saw one of the cottontails jump into his lap to take a piece of carrot.  And every morning he'd stick that wad of Blackjack gum on a rock at the top... Could Blackjack gum survive 40 years of Inyokern heat, rain, snow, sun?  I'll let you know later in the spring.....

Where do you live now? Trona, California

How many years were you in the desert? Childhood - but I'm back now!

Are you willing to help with pictures? I have pics of Trona.

Are you willing to help with stories? of Trona.

Comments:
I was born and raised in Trona, and in December, 2008, I moved back.  I am saddened by the condition of Trona.  I can't find a place for me and my cat to live!

I hope to explore the geological wonders that surround us here.  We really do live in a geological paradise.

It's taken me two weeks to come here since hearing of Pat's passing. He and I had become very good internet friends over the past seven years. I was blessed to meet him at the All Class Reunion! I miss his daily emails and funny anecdotes. Whenever I get a blonde joke my first instinct is to forward it on to Pat...
Whoever takes over this website has some big shoes to fill! I know that we will all miss what Pat contributed to here and what he meant to us, his friends. Pam
