Left area in 1956. I recently paid a visit to China Lake and was dismayed that everything, school, housing, etc. was all gone. Only "B" mountain remains the same.
I remember one day when the whole base was abuzz. Howard Hughes was coming!

Comments: Any memory I have of R/c includes Dave Craddock, with whom I mispent my youth. Mostly at the Station Theater. I had the opportunity, through his daughter and another website, to make contact with Ray Schultz a few years back. Ray was the great old guy who manages the theater, with whom Dave and I were constantly in trouble. We were such pains in the ass that Ray eventually put us to work every time we got rowdy--we'd count token or clean the lobby or just hang out and talk movies--and we were 12 or 13 at the time. Great guy, Ray.
One time, Dave and I went through old Rocketeers at the Station Library and made a list of all the movies we saw between 1969 (when we met) and 1975 (when we moved off base). We averaged something like 3 movies a week for three of those years. Hey, at 15 cents, then 25, then a 35 cent token, it was a cheap way for our folks to keep us off the streets! We used to even walk from Upjohn and Downs to the base theater twice a week after we moved to R/c (but kept the T on our passes for a while).
Great site--thanks for the trip down memory lane (oh, you really should put up a place for "Contacts" where people who stop by but don't want to register can leave their email address if they want).

Are you willing to help with stories? Info on John Pinney
Comments: I served in Viet Nam with John Pinney. He was a wonderful soldier and good man. He was respected, loved and missed by his fellow soldiers in Viet Nam. I have always hopped to drive through your community and see the pool named after Sgt Pinney. May he always be remembered as a man who served his country during difficult times and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Comments: What a wonderful trip down memory lane. Thanks so much for putting this together. My kids were born 'back east' and have always wondered about the 'desert' where Mom grew up.
