Where do you live now? Mesa Arizona

How many years were you in the desert? 10

Are you willing to help with pictures? Sorry, I don't have any

Are you willing to help with stories? If I can

Comments:

Yesterday, in Phoenix, I remembered Tiny's Burgers and, wonder of wonders, today I googled and found this site. I graduated from Burroughs HS in '65 and remember Linda Bauer as a classmate, although I didn't know her well. Along with everyone else, Tiny and Bauer's Burgers are some of my fondest memories.

One story I remember being told is about was a new NOTS China Lake base commander who had apparently offended the higher ups shortly after WWII. He drove up to the main gate, pulling his small yacht, and asked the guard, "Where's the lake? The guard pointed east and said, "Straight ahead."

I don't know if it was true or not, but it's still a great story.

Great to see a site on the home town. Though it was dry, hot and sometimes less then paradise it will always be home. I am far away now but in reality I am there everyday watching the jets fly overhead and singing the B U R R O S song at the football game. Lifes full of changes and what we learned as a child is who we are today. I guess in that I will always be a Ridgecrest Resident.

Are you willing to help with pictures? still diiging

Are you willing to help with stories? I've told a few

Comments:
I just looked at the wikipedia article on China Lake and they left out a lot of good stuff for example:

1. China Lake's role in building the Nagasaki bomb. Groves Street School was named for the head of the Manhattan Project.

2. NOTSNIK China Lake's attempt to orbit the first American satellite. It probably went into orbit, but the radio failed so it couldn't be tracked.

3. Bob Hope's USO show "I'm a golfer and I always wanted to see 12,000 people stuck in a sand trap."

4. Aldous Huxley's visit "physicists working three shifts working Ad Majorem Diaboli Gloriem building bigger bombs and rockets."

I'm going to try to add those and some other things. Anyone else who thinks China Lake and the valley should have their stories told well should help out. As I understand references are a big plus. Anyone can propose changes and then they get sorted out with the acurate, interesting, and relevant stuff staying on.

How many years were you in the desert? 16 years

Are you willing to help with pictures? I really don't have any that anyone would be interested in.

I worked at China Lake Naval Weapons Center from 1968 to 1984.  Of all the places I worked during my 32 year DOD career, China Lake is the most memorable.  Through all the bad times and good times I loved living there.

Was just there a couple weeks ago, visiting sites my grandfather, John Carricart would have frequented nearly a century ago. He's the one Carricart Lake was named for and lived at Junction Ranch off and on until his death in 1945. Was involved in various business ventures ranging from Ballarat to his blacksmith shop in Johannesburg around 1905

I know he loved the region, and now I can see why. I plan to return later this year, and stay longer. Anyone with any knowledge, pictures, or stories of John Carricart or Domingo Etcharren, feel free to contact me!
