I was born and raised in the valley and my parents and brother still live there.  Back in the 70's my Grandfather worked at the old bowling alley on Ridgecrest Blvd. and he use to let me do some bowling there during the non-busy hours.  I have been thinking about bringing my son to the valley to see where it was that I grew up.

This is a great site that you have created :)  Thank-you.

Nice to find this site.  I have fond memories of Ridgecrest, California.  I lived there from 1970 to 1975 with a brief departure to Lemoore, California in 1974. However, I came back to graduate at Burroughs High School in 1975.

I rode at Bottom Acre Stables and my Dad bought my first horse there.  Her name was Miss Chick and I had her until she passed about 20 years later.

My memories of riding at the stables and being around the horses are the fondest memories I have.  I remember the owners Floyd and Velma and their son, Les Pickrell.  One summer my parents let me go on a camping trip where we took the horses.  That was one of the best times of my life!  Such beautiful riding trails and having fun as a teenager.

I am interested in reconnecting with local childhood friends from the area and also friends from the military.  Especially anyone that may have been in the following areas below:

  • Atsugi, Japan
  • Beeville, Texas
  • Lemoore, California
  • San Diego, California

I was born in Ridgecrest in 1962.

My Dad worked at the base. His name was Cliff Downing. My Mom was a Hair Dresser until she died of cancer shortly after I turned 4. She was only 42. Her name was Laura Jean Downing. I wonder if anyone remembers her. My older Sisters name is Lori. She is 5-1/2 years older than me. I remember she was in girl scouts. We have old movies of her in a parade.

We rented from  "The Seamons"  I don't recall their first names but I remember they had a swimming pool in their back yard and owned several rentals.  We lived at 319 (I think) Robinson Road in a white house than moved to a green house next door after my Mom passed away.  I found the house on Google street maps and was surprised to see the houses still there and hadn't changed much except the old sap trees I use to climb weren't there.

I went to K and 1st grade in Ridgecrest. We lived a few blocks from the school. My K teacher was Mrs McCannon (sp?). I had a best friend who visited her grandmother who lived across the street from us, her name was Cheryl Kinslow.

I had to do 1st grade over because I started school too early. Had to take a bus to a different school several miles away. A new school. I remember they had us kids clear rocks from the playground during recess instead of play.

My Sister and her friend took me to a horse stables , I don't know how often but  one time I do remember was when I fell off of a pony while being led and when I opened my eyes I was looking up at the pony's chest.

Our Dad use to take us to Lake Isabella. He had a speed boat. That is where I learned how to swim.

My Dad was a draftsman and designed one of the motels in Ridgecrest. I have the drawing but it is packed away. I don't know if he designed any more buildings in Ridgecrest but I know he designed several in Palm Springs.

I wish I had more memories to share but I was very young. We moved to Oregon 3 years after my mom passed away when I was 7.
