I grew up in the lower desert, Indio, Palm Springs, but now, after moving (retiring) in Red Mountain, I am looking for information on the area. I came across your website, and while reading all the entries it sounded so much like growing up in Indio. Thank you for taking the time and effort to create this for all to enjoy!

Comments: This is a terrific site. My husband was raised in Ridgecrest before coming up to Portland. He lived there for 28 years.
Now we visit his family there about once a year. When people ask where Ridgecrest is, I forward them the link to this website. It's been a terrific help in explaining to friends where we go every year.
I've been to Ridgecrest in fall, summer and late spring and have loved it each time. Being a native Portlander, I love it that I can wear shorts in November, which is the start of the cold, rainy season in northwestern Oregon. (No, it doesn't rain all the time in the whole state, despite what the media says. In fact, a large part of Oregon is desert, and Portland can reach 100 in the summer.)
Anyhoo, thanks again for the terrific website.

How many years were you in the desert? 3 years off and on (work)
Are you willing to help with pictures? Don't know if I still have any (1980s)
Are you willing to help with stories? Not to many stories on my side, just memories
Comments: Worked out of NAS China Lake back in the mid 80s. Used to go up to Grumpy Bears for a spot of food, view and beef jerky.
Enjoyed the desert having come down from the Bay Area at that time. Now that I am in the Outerbanks of the Carolinas, I still miss the desert (that is the older days of the desert).
Went back a few years ago, area has grown and got more paved over. Old bars and pool hall places have gone by the wayside.
Plan to get back there for spot visit later on my Harley..........

Comments: I was born in Ridgecrest, CA in Dr. Thomas Drummond's clinic, December 16, 1946 . My mother told me that there was the doctor's clinic, a bar, farm storage warehouse, a general store, and a tent city, the day I was born. She was upset that she had to deliver her first child in the doctor's office and not in the navy hospital on the base. The navy didn't allow civilians to use the base hospital, unless it happened on the base. My parents lived in the village of Inyokern. My father was a lead engineer for Jet Propulsion/Cal-Tech. He had started on rockets, then worked on the Lark cruise missile. Dr. Thomas Drummond had an airplane so he could reach his patients. I returned to Ridgecrest when I was fifty years old to see a large city with a Walmart and Kmart. Rick Gillmore, Dec, 22, 2007

Comments:
This is a great site, brings back so many great memories from growing up (and makes it easy to show people WHERE I grew up). Now living in New England, I miss so much about Ridgecrest. Since my parents moved from Ridgecrest in 2002 it's hard to find excuses to go back. I miss my hikes up at Whitney, Walkers Pass, and Mammoth; just sitting up at CCCC over looking the city and being able to see the stars; swimming at Penny Pool; and four wheeling in the desert.
