Our family moved to China Lake in the summer 1954 when my father John Holden trensferred from Pasadena. I was in the 8th grade then and we lived on the base. First on Grove Street then on Mitcher Street. I graduated from BHS in 1959. During my years at BHS I was student manager of the basketball team in 1957, 1958 and 1959. I have 2 brothers. Michael Holden(61) and Larry Holden(72 ?). Larry still lives in R/C and Mike lives in Santa Cruz. I have not lived in Ridgecrest since 1964 but still refer to it as my home. I do get back to visit on occasion. I found your web site by accident and just spent the last 4 hours looking at it. It is really great. Brings back many memories of the people I new and the places I use to go John Mel Holden

I remember being in Ridgectest for Many years. My family and I first came to Ridgecrest is in the summer of 1956 to see my oldest brother who was stationed here at China Lake. Ridgecrest to me seemed to be no more than a wide place in the road, but with us needing a home and nothing better happening at that minute my parents decided to stay. My Dad ended up getting a job as janitor for the united states Post Office from there he and my mom took over cleaning all the buildings on that entire block except one spouting goods stoor. The store weren't much to talk about. I remember Rex Gill of Gills Lumber Yard hiring my mom to take care of their house. Housing was sparse here and pretty run down a lot of people were finding it hard to make a living here during those times if they didn't work for the base doing something. All my brothers and sisters grew up here and Married , some several times, my Oldest brother ever ran off to Bakersfield and became a sheriff. I my self took a fairly different direction. Ridgecrest was a DESERT PARTY TOWN, And just about any night of the week you would find us out at the borrs nest, Pregnant Point, or a number of other party spots polishing off many cans of beer or whatever brand of wine cooler that had just came out that week. We didn't hurt anything but there sure were a lot of us out there. I can truthfully tell you there wasn't many straight kids in town during those years. I know most of the friends from there are either moved or gone by now but for the ones that are left I just want to say hello!! Have a good life

Comments: Lived most of my life in the desert somewhere. Have lived in R/C for the past 21.5 years (came here in Oct. 1985) to work in the base fire department. Lived in San Antonio, TX for about 4 years. Grew up in the Antelope Valley - Palmdale & Quartz Hill. Attended all of my Elementary, Jr. High, High schools there. Born & lived in Arizona for almost 3.5 years. So, I guess I qualify as a desert rat and couldn't have lived better anywhere else.
